Jen's GoGs
July 15th, 2019
Oh, my friends. We’re at it again this summer. Watch out for GoGs in the Tampa area and beyond. My students are still spreading the love (and they are getting so creative this semester!!!). Wish em luck- I’ve had some pretty epic GoG’ers before!
Subtext from one of Jen's former students:
Those who know me know that “speechless” is not a feeling I experience often. In fact, I’d say I’ve only been left speechless twice in my life—with today being one of those times. When I finally got the words to respond, only happy tears would come out (ain’t no shame in crying in front of students!). The past couple of months have been a struggle for me—personally, professionally, and academically. But today when I walked into the classroom and my students told me to look at the whiteboards, I was immediately overwhelmed with extreme feelings of love, happiness, support, and gratitude. Gratitude for the amazing students that participated in such a beautiful act of kindness (many of whom have never even met me); gratitude for the amazing healing power of words; and gratitude for the amazing person, scholar, teacher, and friend that would do this for me. You have such a great heart, Jennifer Whalen, and I cannot even put into words how much this meant to me. Please tell all your students thank you from the bottom of my happy heart!

Tonight I received this award for having you all (past and present students, family, and friends) do Gifts of Gratitude. This award actually doesn't, in my opinion, belong to me. Congratulations on making my life and so many other lives better for simple acts of giving gratitude to others.

Here's what's fun: Reading, researching, and just generally, my life. Here's what's not fun: 367 missing documents of dissertation research because my computer took a crap the first week of school and the tech repair put them all into one untitled folder in a very critical time period where I need them and my car (again) being a gigantic time suck with it's ridiculous repairs.
Here's what the most fun is: That my students are still doing Gifts of Gratitude (GOGS) and that I have a whole team of people who very much love me backing me up. Thank you ❤
As is said, "It's just a bad day, not a bad life."

My sneaky students were at it again by decorating my office door! What a beautiful way to start the day. Thank you for your Gift of Gratitude this morning.

Setting up for our GOG! Free t-shirt making at the Ray Jay in Lot 4! Students come out and support your bulls 🙂 #GoG
As a part of Gifts of Gratitude (GOG) exercise for the love class this semester, Kyle and I put out shirts and supplies for students from our own USF group to international students... The results were awesome! We ran out of shirts so quickly for students to decorate I got to spend homecoming with my sweetheart and enjoy my first EVER USF game tailgating (We even got to play cornhole!) and watching some of my students play both on the field and in the band. I also got to be on the big screen three times! What an awesome weekend with Kyle and so much fun making shirts and sharing the love! #GoG

My students have been working on a project for the Communication and Love class called "Gifts of Gratitude." They work in teams outside of class to go out and do nice things for other people on their own time. Today one group sent me an email spreading some words of encouragement through social media so I got a "Gift of Gratitude" when I saw that they started to #GoG (I hope I did that right, still learning how to use Twitter). So if you get a minute sometime today to do a favor for someone else, especially at this time in the semester, please pass on your GOG to someone else 🙂 Mine really made my day! Keep on sharing the love, GoGers!

My students say I bear a resemblance to Jessie from Toy Story so during final presentations I got a lot of gratitude and a fun Jessie toy to help me remember all the great service learning these students did at 8am this semester in the heat and rain. Awesome class ❤

This happened today. My students are doing a project I call "Gifts of Gratitude" for part of their semester projects. They gave a whoppingly awesome one to me by decorating my office. Have I mentioned I love my job? These students are amazing.
